The emphasis on intent is important in tai chi because the use of strength is very different than other martial arts. This allows time for your mind to contemplate the movement and imagine the movement in your mind before your muscles actually move.

And there are places where one can borrow consciousness raising sound and video tapes. There is a bookshop in the main office filled with tapes and books and things one might need. Some come for room and board but most are here for workshops and seminars.

It is more fun than kindergarten and more free than old fashioned rock concerts at the Greek Theatre in L.A. (In the nature of this play one might turn a leaf or a rock into a musical instrument and get a unique sound or one might wear costumes or make faces or pretend one is a rock star an athlete or a dancer or singer -- all is allowed).

This experience in nature is a far cry from my usual surroundings in the City of L.A. Sometimes huge wall length reflective mirrors are exposed by withdrawn curtains. There is an old finely tuned antique classy black piano in one corner of the immense space and in the opposite corner a wonderful stereo system -- music is playing softly but will change tempo radically several times in the next 45 minutes. If you have to leave the class or event for some reason quietly apologize and go to the side and quietly leave the room if necessary. Do not wander about and distract or talk to people. And while we are at it. Shut off those cell phones. If you go back into the group, go to the back and quietly resume. Under no circumstances voice an opinion in a class or social instruction group. Do not voice an opinion in class. Try to focus on how this teacher can expand your dance and maybe social horizons. Do not compare openly to other teachers. Do not complain about how a movement is presented or that it is too difficult or easy.

School for me was not the most inspiring place. I was quiet and retiring on the surface but a secret revolutionary developing a silent but burgeoning dislike of authority in all its forms. I had a couple of special friends but was never invited to join the 'in' crowd. My personality was still forming. I had no way of impressing it on anyone. I had zero marketing capacity so I could never sell my coolness so that there would be buyers.
