It was 1997. Some college friends from Newburyport, MA invited me up to relax and take a break from my loss. I went. They asked if I wanted to see a movie, and I said "sure, why not". We drove to New Hampshire as they wanted to see a new Jack Nicholson movie "As Good As It Gets". I enjoy his movies so figured I would at least be entertained, in spite of the depression and continued writers block I was experiencing.

The room seems to double in size and the outside lighting adds a unique dimension. A beam of light shines in stirring the room. There is an old finely tuned antique classy black piano in one corner of the immense space and in the opposite corner a wonderful stereo system -- music is playing softly but will change tempo radically several times in the next 45 minutes. Sometimes a rug, soft mats or pillows cover the entire smooth shiny wooden floor.

This grip is generally held by many concert percussionists, jazz drum kit players, rock band drummers and by marching percussions tenor drummers and bass drummers.

These must be realistic but just above their current standards to give the class an incentive to try. As they achieve each goal 'raise the bar' again. Acknowledge publicly with the class each goal that is met and exceeded. These expectations should centre on academic, behavioural, industry and cooperation issues. The goals must be published and crossed off as each is achieved.

Someone might show specially prepared museum quality photos of petroglyphs (300 -- 20,000+ years old from the Coso Range) aka cave drawings. Or as we sit in circles on pillows we may listen or share the stories of our lives -- or might get in touch with deep seated feelings. Others may temporarily doze off.

Nurture another golden goose. Identify a friend or a loved one running on fumes. Pick up her kids after school, take over the scout meeting for her, bring her a home-cooked dinner (just double your batch) and leave it on the step. Later, when I turned fifteen, I went on a rather special family holiday. Our normal holidays were spent camping in tents. This time we stayed in a lovely old colonial hotel in the highlands. I first saw him across from our family table in the diningroom. He was alone at his table. Tall, dark haired with beard and moustache, he was about ten years too old for me. He was, however, around the age of all the men in the books I was absorbing by osmosis at the time.

If you have to leave the class or event for some reason quietly apologize and go to the side and quietly leave the room if necessary. Do not wander about and distract or talk to people. And while we are at it. Shut off those cell phones. If you go back into the group, go to the back and quietly resume. Under no circumstances voice an opinion in a class or social instruction group. Do not voice an opinion in class. Try to focus on how this teacher can expand your dance and maybe social horizons. Do not compare openly to other teachers. Do not complain about how a movement is presented or that it is too difficult or easy.
